Peter O. Zierlein, is an illustrator and paper cut artist,
MFA from the Art Institute ofBoston and a BFA in Communication
Design from Pratt Institute,Brooklyn, NY.
Zierlein was born and raised in Germany. Early artistic exploits include
posters and illustrations for local clubs and publications, painting designs
on carnival parade floats and working as stage and prop painter at the
local city theater.
Upon arrival in the US, Zierlein became a 'T-shirt Artist Entrepreneur'
and studied at Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY.
Zierlein got first illustration commissions from publications like the
Village Voice, New York Magazine, a.o.
Returning to Germany in 1991 Zierlein’s work soon appeared on a regular
basis in major German, Italian and French magazines and newspapers.
Zierlein's “Tryptich For Germany” became part of the
permanent collections of the CologneLudwig Museum,
StuttgartStaatsgalerie and Kassel Documenta Archiv.
In 1998 Zierlein returned to New York City and was soon working for the
New York Times Book Review and Op Ed Pages, as well as other major
national and international publications. Much of Zierlein’s political
illustrations revolve around the paradigm of power. In his large format
symmetrical paper cuts he attempts to illustrate a “Balance of Power”.
Zierlein lectures, exhibits and holds workshops based on his paper cuts.
